Napster is back with iTunes challenge
Major labels in particular had previously been reluctant to allow online retailers to sell their songs without protection as a way to avoid piracy. As the industry outlook gets tougher more executives are willing to experiment or take a risk."We're now moving from under the DRM cloud," said Chris Gorog, Napster chief executive. "Now consumers can use Napster with any device," he added. Most songs on the service will be available for 99 cents ($1.27) each and $9.95 an album.Though Napster will be hoping to take on iTunes it will try to do so by being compatible with Apple's service. According to executives, MP3 songs bought on the Napster web-based service will be automatically synched into a user's existing iTunes music library if they use that library. The success of iTunes, which accounts for more than 70 per cent of all digital music sales in the US has been a double-edged sword for the music industry.iTunes has been widely acknowledged by music industry watchers as playing the lead role in developing the legal and commercially viable digital music sector. But in the last year, music executives at major labels have worried that iTunes' dominant position might be hampering the expansion of the nascent market.iTunes said last month it had overtaken Wal-Mart to become the biggest retailer of music in the U.S with more than 4 billion songs sold since launch in 2003.But concerns have mounted in the music industry as CDs sales have dropped faster than expected while the growth of digital music sales is yet to make up for the shortfall.Music industry executives have recently been encouraging new entrants to the digital music business such as online retailer Amazon.com and News Corp's social networking site MySpace. This makes Napster the latest name to join the ranks of recent music industry partners who might help tip the balance of power back from Apple in favour of the major labels.Gorog said he still believes that despite the success of Apple's download service Napster will still support its subscription service which will grow as people become more aware of it."We believe ultimately that consumers will be moving to an unlimited music model," said Gorog.- REUTERS

Iron Maiden, Somewhere Back In Time
This new collection of Iron Maiden tracks contains work from a period that was creatively their busiest and, arguably, most successful. It's a mixed bag with some tracks certainly sounding their age (like The Trooper in particular). It's straight-ahead, grab-some-furniture-and-shake-your-brain-for-three-and-a-half-minutes (stopping when you get a bit dizzy, or to have a swig of snakebite), rock.
This collection is a fascinating reflection of the extent to which Iron Maiden defined heavy metal's enduring themes and styles: Alienation, allegory, fantasy, the occult, exploitation and abuse of power. They're also pioneers in terms of understanding that this music is theatre: not just something to be played but really performed.
You also can't discuss 'Maiden without touching on Dickinson's voice. The vocal equivalent of smoking, freshly smelted Sheffield steel, sweating, soaring, clad in leather and studs; it's a combination of gifted genetics, operatic chutzpah and gallons of Newcastle Brown Ale.
One of the early highlights is 2 Minutes To Midnight. Its opening drum damage dives into a finger-itching bassline and infectious hi-hat, over the top of a brilliantly energetic riff that's perfectly complemented by Dickinson's galloping horse vocal delivery. It's an example of hard rock perfection.
Can I Play With Madness and The Number Of The Beast are charging, grand, anthemic, operatic stadium fillers, built on a wall of drum and guitar hooks. Like all great rock, they thrive on increasing volume. They also illustrate Dickinson's vocal dexterity and ability to lift songs that could sound ordinary if they weren't delivered with such bravado and abandon.
Available to download from the Maiden website as a free-for-three-listens bargain - with this album it looks like metal's old warhorses are intent that their mighty legacy will live on well into the next millenium.

New Britney sex tape ready for release
A new sex tape featuring troubled pop star Britney Spears is set to be released.
The footage allegedly features Britney, 26, stripping off naked apart from a pink wig, and romping with ex-boyfriend Adnan Ghalib.
The paparazzi photographer is reportedly trying to sell the full two-hour version, which is said to contain twenty minutes of full sex after a long session of foreplay, to the highest bidder.
A source said: "The video starts with Britney undressing. She was wearing some cheap clothes. The sex wasn't particularly kinky but Britney wears a pink wig throughout.
"At one point in the tape Adnan asks Britney to remove the pink wig but she refuses, saying 'Take what off? There's nothing left to take off.' "
Adnan had a three-month relationship with the mother-of-two at the height of her alleged nervous breakdown earlier this year.
The sex tape was supposedly shot while the couple holidayed in Mexico in January.
X-rated footage of Britney and ex-husband Kevin Federline reportedly exists but has never been released to the public.
Britney was admitted to hospital in January twice on mental health issues, but is now recovering, and has just returned from holidaying in Costa Rica at actor Mel Gibson's vacation home.

Remy Ma - Remy Mas Victim Speaks Out
The woman shot by rapper REMY MA has confessed she might not be able to have children of her own following the 2007 incident.
The 26-year-old hip-hop star - real name Reminisce Smith - was convicted in March (08) of assault, weapons possession and attempted coercion for shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the abdomen.
The 24-year-old victim admits she still cries every time she sees her gunshot wounds - and fears she will never become a mother.
She says, "This thing makes me cry every time I talk about it. I have these ugly scars. My stomach is crazy."
And Barnes-Joseph doesn't believe Smith's eight-year sentence is adequate.
She adds, "She's got a kid. She'll come out in eight years and see her kid. I might not be able to have kids."
However, Smith has questioned Barnes-Joseph's version of events.
She says, "(She's) bending the truth. She's stretching it to make it seem like she did nothing wrong. I don't got to shoot no girls."
And Smith claims she was offered a plea deal that carried a three-year sentence, but turned it down because she believed she would be acquitted.
She adds, "You think I would jeopardise being away from my child for five to 25 years if I even had an inkling that I was guilty of something?"
